Welcome to Quan2m! the Podcast every STEM student should be listening to. Covering everything from what’s going on in the world of science, interviewing people with STEM majors and what they have gone on to do. To talking about finance, careers and business.

In the last we talked about the claims that Tesla has no marketing.

Today I want to talk about brand.

I was just walking today and a memory from my childhood poped into my head. I was small. Maybe like 7 or something, I don’t know. All I remember that standing up the sofa back rest was taller than me. Anyway my parents were talking business. Something with sales, I don’t recall the specifics, but I remember this. I started telling them that they should build a brand.

Now I was fucking 7 so I knew fuck all about how to actually go about building a brand, but if a fucking 7 year old can tell that brand is important then that should tell you just how important it is.

Before I get to this though I have to admit my fuck up. 7 year old me was way smarter than 13 year old me. All the business shit I did when I was young would fucking personal brand as shit. Think about it. Some 13 year old kid produces content about his experience in business and you see it build up and go through stages all the way to pitching a bank and now fair. All the lessons I learned, mistakes I made, fun I had. Now that would be so good if I made content around it.

Nevertheless its better late than never and here I am realising my mistake and deciding to start when I started this podcast. That is still a massive advantage. The average age to start your first business is 47. Forty fucking seven. Yeah. That fucking late. 27 year fucking headstart. Now that’s time I can actually do something with.

What I really want to talk about though is why brand is important for you. Think about your friends. Now think about which one of them you would call the most creative one. This is their brand in your small circle. If someone asked you that they are looking for someone creative for a job you would probably recommend them if you knew they were interested. Right?

Now think about it like this. What if that small circle wasn’t a small circle and instead fifty thousand people knew that friend as the creative one. That’s an achievable audience. Given that the average person knows 600 people that’s a reach of 30 million people. In this case if your friend is looking for a job then someone will know someone from the 30 million people who can help them get the job they want.

Now there is a common counterargument. “But the field I like is super niche” Well in that case your odds are even better. Niche field means more people in it know each other so an audience of just 1000 people will cover most of the field.

Brand doesn’t just matter on the business level. It matters on the individual level. Public facing personal brands have grown in popularity due to their utility, but if we’re being honest they are nowhere near popular enough since most people don’t know someone with a public facing personal brand.
